How to File Your Tax in Nigeria

Clear, simple and accurate — for salary workers, freelancers, businesses and VAT filers.

Good news for salary workers: If your employer deducts PAYE monthly, you do not file a return yourself. You still need a TIN linked to your NIN and BVN.
1
Get your TIN from NRS
Every taxpayer needs a TIN under NTA 2025. It's now automatically linked to your NIN.
Visit NRS Portal →
2
Confirm your employer deducts PAYE
Check your payslip — it must show PAYE deducted. Employers must remit to your State IRS by the 10th monthly.
3
Collect your annual Form H1
At year end, your employer gives you a tax deduction card. Keep it — needed for loans, visas and disputes.
4
File separately if you have other income
Rental income, freelance, crypto or dividends? Declare separately by April 30 each year.
5
Documents you need
  • Valid NIN
  • BVN
  • TIN
  • Recent payslips
  • Employer tax remittance receipts
Important: Freelancers, content creators, crypto traders and POS operators must file their own tax return by April 30 every year. All digital income is taxable under NTA 2025.
1
Register for a TIN at the NRS
Register as self-employed using your NIN, BVN and email.
Register TIN →
2
Keep records of all income
Track every source — client payments, AdSense, crypto withdrawals, POS transactions. Bank inflows are monitored under NTA 2025.
3
Calculate your tax with WafsTax
Tax-free threshold is NGN 800,000. Enter all income sources combined.
4
File at your State IRS by April 30
Visit your State Internal Revenue Service portal.
5
Pay via Remita
Nigeria's official government payment platform — pay by card, transfer or USSD.
Pay via Remita →
Key rule: Turnover ≤ NGN 100M → fully exempt from CIT. Still file a nil return. Above NGN 100M → pay 30% on taxable profit.
1
Check your CIT position
Use our CIT calculator to confirm exempt or liable.
2
Register company TIN with NRS
Separate from CAC. Use your CAC certificate and directors' details.
Register →
3
Prepare audited financial statements
Revenue, allowable deductions and taxable profit. Allowable: salaries, rent, depreciation, capital allowances.
4
File CIT return by March 31
File via NRS e-filing portal or at your nearest NRS office.
5
Pay and get your TCC
Tax Clearance Certificate required for contracts, licences and tenders.
Pay via Remita →
VAT rule: Turnover above NGN 25M → compulsory registration. Rate: 7.5%. File monthly by the 21st.
1
Check if you must register
Above NGN 25M turnover — compulsory. Below — voluntary but lets you claim input VAT (new under NTA 2025).
2
Register at NRS
Receive your VAT registration number — display it on all invoices.
Register →
3
Charge 7.5% VAT on invoices
Zero-rated: food, medicine, education, exports.
4
File monthly by the 21st
Output VAT collected minus input VAT paid = amount to remit. Late filing attracts heavy penalties.

All tips are 100% legal under NTA 2025. Tax avoidance (legal planning) is your right. Tax evasion (hiding income) is a criminal offence.
🏠
Claim your rent relief deduction
Save up to NGN 120,000/year
Deduct 20% of annual rent paid from taxable income — up to NGN 500,000. Many Nigerians are missing this.
Example: NGN 600k rent → NGN 120k deduction → saves ~NGN 13,200 in tax.
💼
Maximise business expense deductions
Save 30% on every legitimate expense
Internet, phone, equipment, transport to clients, office supplies — all reduce your taxable profit.
Example: NGN 5M income, NGN 500k expenses → NGN 4.5M taxable → saves ~NGN 60k in tax.
🏢
Keep company turnover under NGN 100M
Save 30% CIT — legally
Companies at or below NGN 100M turnover pay zero CIT. Proper structuring advice can keep you exempt.
Example: NGN 95M turnover → NGN 0 CIT. NGN 105M turnover → NGN 6M CIT on NGN 20M profit.
📅
File on time — avoid severe penalties
Save 10–40% in penalties
Late PAYE remittance: 40% penalty. Unpaid tax: 15% interest per annum. Filing on time is free money.
Example: NGN 500k unremitted PAYE → NGN 200k penalty. Total cost NGN 700k instead of NGN 500k.
For employers: Enter all staff names and annual salaries. WafsTax calculates PAYE for each employee under NTA 2025.
